German Christmas Traditions

Christmas  (German: das Weihnachten) is considered by many Germans to be the most important of the major holidays.  Although secularized and commercialized in comparison to the Christmas celebrations of Martin Luther’s time, the German Christmas season is a time to be with family and friends.  Not only the holiday itself, but also the weeks leading up to Christmas involve many traditions and customs of diverse origins.  Christmas is celebrated on the December 25 and 26, 1st Christmas Day and the 2nd Christmas Day.  Stores close on December 24, 25, and 26.

Christmas Pyramids (German: die Weihnachtspyramide) can be works of art. This pyramid has a lot of detail and is 37 inches tall.

Christmas Markets are a tradition that date back to the 14th century.
